Masdar City is a new urban development in the United Arab Emirates that is being built around a unique purpose: to become one of the world's most sustainable cities powered by renewable energy, and to serve as a clean technology cluster that brings sustainability best practices and solutions to the rest of the globe.
Tracking Resource Use – Energy, Water, and Waste
C3 provides Masdar City with an enterprise class solution that allows them to visualize and track all aspects of resource use across the city. For energy production management, Masdar City can compare solar power production to current energy use, demonstrating when they are net contributors of electricity to the grid. For transportation, Masdar can track the efficiency of the system, providing data on the energy use per passenger and per trip, so that they can maximize commute efficiency. For waste, Masdar City is measuring both waste production and recycling information, so that landfill usage is minimized. For water, Masdar City is tracking both the amount used and the amount recycled for irrigation purposes. Across all parts of Masdar City, C3 tracks the overall carbon footprint.
Analysis conducted by C3 confirms that Masdar City's residential buildings are highly efficient, with a 56 percent reduction in electricity demand versus the ASHRAE 90.1-2004 standard, and a 70 percent reduction versus the average Abu Dhabi multi-unit residential building.
Moving Towards Energy Benchmarking
As Masdar City grows and approaches its full capacity, C3 will provide increasing insight into the overall use of resources, providing comprehensive benchmark data for the various technologies implemented at Masdar City. This rich database of real-world performance results will help Masdar to understand which technologies are delivering the best performance over time, and to make recommendations to other cities considering similar technology deployments.
